To begin, could you share how you came to lead Plus Engineering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Interestingly, my career didn\u2019t start in manufacturing at all. I studied economics and joined a bank after graduation. Plus Engineering was a client of that bank, and when the founder fell ill, the company asked for help in finding a successor. Somehow the choice landed on me. Did your banking background influence how you managed the company?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Absolutely. As a banker, I always envied manufacturing for its clarity: costs and prices are concrete, unlike in services. When I joined, I noticed some blind spots in financial oversight\u2014things technical leaders didn\u2019t always see. My banking experience helped me strengthen the company\u2019s foundation. Of course, employees were skeptical at first\u2014\u201cCan a banker really run a factory?\u201d\u2014but we earned each other\u2019s trust over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: Over your years in manufacturing, how has the industry around you changed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: The most striking change is globalization. Major manufacturers have shifted production overseas to cut costs, leaving fewer projects in Japan. Domestic competition has intensified. On top of that, financial scrutiny has become stricter, and many small manufacturers face succession issues. Business closures and bankruptcies are increasingly common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: How has Plus Engineering adapted to this environment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Rather than chasing cost reductions, we decided to pursue value creation. We focus on high-value, custom-made parts\u2014things that only Japanese craftsmanship can deliver. This often means complex, one-of-a-kind products that aren\u2019t found in catalogs. And those strengths have brought us opportunities with global electronics companies, semiconductor makers, food machinery firms, medical institutions, and even aerospace clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: That\u2019s quite diverse. Do you have an example of a recent challenge you\u2019re proud your team overcame?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Yes. Traditionally, we specialized in components around 100 mm in size, mostly for electronics. But recently, we were asked to create molds for PET bottle caps and glass bottles\u2014an entirely new field for us. It was challenging, but we succeeded. And now, with our new facility, we\u2019re actively taking on projects requiring 1-micron precision, which raises the bar even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: I imagine some customers try overseas suppliers but return to you later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: It happens. Clients move production abroad, but when quality or reliability becomes an issue, they come back. It\u2019s not limited to one industry\u2014this happens everywhere, because one faulty part can stop an entire production line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: Speaking of customers, do you find that they sometimes misunderstand what\u2019s possible in manufacturing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Often. Designers may create drawings with unnecessary complexity or unrealistic specifications. Sometimes the requested material or surface treatment simply won\u2019t work. That\u2019s where we contribute our \u201cwisdom of a parts maker\u201d\u2014practical knowledge built from decades across industries. We propose alternatives, and customers appreciate that problem-solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: It sounds like you\u2019re bridging the gap between design and manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Yes. Too often they are separated. We try to connect them by suggesting improvements. Even if the initial request is rigid, we keep proposing better solutions until we find the right one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: If you could change one thing about the entire manufacturing industry, what would it be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: I\u2019d make it easy to instantly identify the right partner for any task. Manufacturing is built on division of labor\u2014no company can do everything alone. But finding the right collaborator often takes enormous effort. If we could solve that, the entire industry would move faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: And what about the bigger picture\u2014how do you see supply chains evolving globally?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Current trade policies, especially U.S. tariffs, are reshaping logistics. This creates real risks: certain parts may no longer be sourced as before. We must stay alert and flexible to adapt quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: Looking far ahead, what do you imagine Plus Engineering will look like in 50 years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: I believe we\u2019ll maintain today\u2019s scale with perhaps half the workforce. AI and automation will take over much of the work, including programming. But decision-making\u2014the judgment\u2014will remain human. That\u2019s where differentiation will happen. Machines can calculate, but people must decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex: So even as technology advances, human creativity remains essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Suzuki: Exactly. In fact, companies that can combine advanced automation with human sensitivity and solution-proposing will survive. We process around 10,000 unique items annually for 400 clients in Japan. Our integrated facility handles cutting, grinding, and EDM under one roof, enabling us to deliver complex, high-performance parts. We believe overseas customers will value this capability. And just as Taiga builds business through dialogue rather than simple quotations, we also build partnerships through conversation.
